Computer Science

The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for productive careers in industry, academia, and government by providing an outstanding environment for teaching, learning, and research in the theory and applications of computing. The Department places high priority on establishing and maintaining innovative research programs to enhance its education quality and make it an important regional, national and international resource center for discovering, integrating and applying new knowledge and technologies.

The CS Department continues to excel, with very high rankings in area of AI & natural language processing, software engineering, cyber security and systems (csrankings.org).

Computer Science General Fund

We strongly encourage innovation in research, in teaching and in service to the profession, the local community, and industry. Our faculty and students are constantly striving to excel and to advance computer science. Your generous contribution will allow us to propel the Computer Science Department to ever-greater heights.

Excellence in Computer Science Fellowship

The Department of Computer Science is one of the largest of its kind in the United States and also proudly maintains top standings in academic rankings. To continue attracting and retaining the best in graduate students, we need your support.

Make your gift to this fund which will support graduate students who have not received a teaching or research assistantship with $1,000 competitive scholarships.

CS Graduate Scholarship

To attract the world’s top scholars in computer science, the Jonsson School is establishing the Erik Jonsson Graduate Scholarship in Computer Science as an endowment to support incoming master’s students. This one-year scholarship will support students who have not received a teaching or research assistantship. Make your gift to this fund in honor of recently retired, long-time faculty member Dr. Hal Sudborough.

Sudborough joined the UT Dallas faculty in 1985 and retired in 2018.  Sudburough was instrumental in laying the foundation that would enable a world class Computer Science department to grow. He taught a number of current faculty who owe a debt of gratitude to his tutelage.  Sudborough also engaged in world class research. His research team solved numerous classical computer science problems, including besting a solution Bill Gates found years before Microsoft was established. “I want to be remembered for contributing to the body of knowledge in my discipline. I’ve found solutions to open problems that nobody knew how to solve.”

CS K12 Outreach

We strongly believe that it is possible to introduce Computer programming to all school students in an enjoyable way and enable them to consider higher education & career in STEM fields. Your support of CS K12 Outreach programs funds operations of afterschool and weekend coding clubs, and summer camps for elementary, middle and high school students to teach coding in a fun, hands-on manner.
