The ZSI is a unique professional development opportunity that provides a 3-day hybrid workshop where 6th-12th grade science educators discover inquiry-based learning tools through hands-on experience with zebra fish. Because they share 70% of their genes with humans, zebrafish are at the forefront of biomedical research. In over 1,000 laboratories around the world, they are helping scientists understand complex diseases such as cancer and muscular dystrophy. The ZSI leverages these benefits to excite students about scientific inquiry, and to help them understand the connections between science and the world they live in.
To continue its impactful growth, the Zebrafish Summer Institute must meet program and operational priorities: teacher recruitment and associated travel and consultation costs, ongoing teacher classroom support and Zebrafish director support, who designs, coordinates, and executes ZSI and provides year-long assistance to educators. The Zebrafish Summer Institute seeks to broaden their impact across the state of Texas via the recruitment of 15 additional 6-12th grade secondary science educators who teach 25% or more English learners.
We are excited to share that this year, a generous alumnus has provided a gift that will match all donations to the ZSI dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000.
