In Critical Media Studies, students investigate the interplay of media and technology with culture and society. In the undergraduate concentration, students learn how to communicate in written, oral, and multimedia forms; to understand the histories and possible futures of media and technology; and to apply this understanding in their own creative work. Their goal: engaging media and technology to transform the world into a more just and equitable one.
Alumni of the CMS concentration have gone on to work in broadcasting, social justice and advocacy work, journalism, K-12 and higher education, public relations, cultural industries (podcasting; screenwriting) and administration (arts organizations), media law and policy organizations, and cultural programming. Alumni of the Emerging Media Studies MA program have gone on to Ph.D. programs, and alumni of the ATEC Ph.D. now continue the work of education in their own careers as professors.
