Who we are
The Center for Translation Studies was founded in 1980 to promote communication between languages and cultures, to introduce international writers to an English-speaking audience, and to establish a literary translation program within the School of Arts and Humanities. The mission of the Center is to pursue excellence in all four cornerstones of our mission: teaching, research, publications, and public outreach.
What we're fundraising for
The Center is currently seeking funding for the research and production of an intersemiotic translation project that will translate a poem written in French into a variety of other forms such as musical composition, dance, and animation. The translations will be presented in the form of a video that includes the various translations along with readings in the original language and in English. The intention of this approach is to recreate the atmosphere of the original foreign language poem and allow viewers to engage with the poem on deeper levels.
Our impact
Our value to the campus is that we offer courses in translation studies that allow undergraduate and graduate students to learn about other cultures through studying literature in translation and to develop the skills a translator uses to translate a literary text originally written in one language into a piece of literature that can stand on its own in English. Our value to the community and the world can be seen in our outreach that includes events that are open to not only the campus community, but to the larger Dallas area community as well as our local and international publications.
